...Business 305 Module 1 Case 1. What do economists mean when they say that there is no such thing as a free lunch? When economists say there is no such thing as free lunch there are saying that everything come with a cost. The product that is been given out for free the resources that was use to produce it was not given to them for free. Let’s take a gift bag that is given when you purchases a perfume set. That gift bag has been made with resources that were bought to produce that product. The saying there is no such thing as free lunch reefers to this. 2. Suppose that your tuition to attend college is $14,000 per year and you spend $5,000 per year on room and board. If you were working full time, you could earn $26,000 per year. What is your opportunity cost of attending college? How does a college education increase one’s human capital? The opportunity cost of attending college is that you are losing out on making the 26,000 per year working a full time job. But as you attend college you are investing in yourself and your future. When you finish college you will make for then the full time job that you have could have been working. The return from the investment of going to college is greater and increases the overall human capital in the long run. 3. When a firm hired its tenth worker, its factory output increased by four units per month. ...Assignment 305 Understanding person-centred approaches In adult care settings Task B Bi Write a reflective account derailing an example of how you have or could have, used a person centred approach in a sensitive or complex situation A new lady arrived at the home where I work with her family and was shown to her room, I asked the lady’s name and she informed me that it was Pat. Pat and her family remained in her room and was brought a tray of tea and biscuits. Pat and her family chatted with the other members of staff and some of the other residents. It was approaching lunchtime and the family was still with her, as Pat did not wish for them to leave just yet, they stayed for lunch with Pat and where still chatting when I returned to see how Pat had settled in, the family where very happy but Pat had started to become agitated that her family where about to leave, the family where trying really hard to comfort Pat saying they would be back the next day to see her. Pat started to follow them out the door to go with them, looking back at it now I could have been more person centred by talking to Pat to try and distract her taking her for a cup of tea and chatting to her to keep her mind of her family leaving. By talking to Pat I could have gained her trust and made her feel welcomed and safe, rather than letting her fret over not seeing her family again. It is an academic discipline and an applied science which seeks to understand individuals and groups by establishing general principles and researching specific cases. Psychology is used in everything, it is used in sales, advertising, managing, statistics, relationships, design, health/psychological health, critical thinking etc. Psychology is beneficial in many ways. Psychology improves communication skills. When we study how people engage in conversation, we can then develop an understanding of how people communicate and gain better personal communication skills and increase effective communication of any regard. This also goes hand in hand when trying to avoid potential miscommunication errors. Understanding psychology also allows for an increased understanding of others. Psychology gives us a “window” into the actions of others that allows us to understand the emotional drive behind human action. This makes it easier to understand actions that seem incomprehensible. Lastly, psychology also helps students gain stronger conflict resolution skills. Once we understand the reasons behind someone's actions, it allows you to become more adept at solving any conflict. ...Azita Beheshti PSYC 305 Week 2 Power is the ability or official capacity to exercise control and authority to reach an objective. The lecture defines: Referent, reward, legitimate, coercive and expert as five different types of power that Sandy, the manager in charge, use’s in order to achieve her objective. The effectiveness of each type of power is greatly dependent on the ability of the Person of Authority, Sandy; to clearly recognize and understand the need and obstacles his/her situation demands, and apply the proper type of power. In the first lecture Sandy utilizes referent power to empower and motivate Danni to do what she needs by rewarding him with a better section. In the other lectures Sandy applies legitimate power in order to guide and help focus Danni to overcome a potentially troublesome situation with the irate customers. Sandy’s legitimate power motivated Danni to use Expert power and minimize the coercive power applied by the customer. The effectiveness of the different types/tools of power varies according to the demands of the situation at hand. A good leader will learn the ability to recognize different situations and problems and learn to apply the proper remedy of power to the task at hand. In my personal experience and based on my personality type I have always found that using referent and reward power has been a great motivator to others and asset in achieving my objectives. People are different, have different needs, wants...

Task B Reflective Account

Write a reflective account detailing an example of how you have, or could have , used a person centered approach in a sensitive or complex situation. A lady that I used to support was told that her father had passed away. One week later her mother also passed away to. As imagined the lady was emotionally distraught about her bereavements, not only had she lost one parent she had lost to. The lady did not have any other family members that she saw regularly so she felt like she had no one now. Emotional support and comfort was given to her whenever she needed it. As it was close to Christmas she felt it would be nice to visit a church and leave some flowers. The ladies beliefs were taken into consideration at this time and she received support to visit a local church to do this. The lady found great comfort in doing this. Over the course of the next view months occasions such as her parents birthday, mother’s day and father’s day came up.

The lady would also like to make things such as cards and flowers and would usually give them to her parents. As she couldn’t do this anymore and these values meant a lot to her, she received support again to fulfill her wishes and took these items to the local church. Throughout this time she always received respect and sympathy. The lady then decided that she would like to move to another service, one where she could have her own space in a self-contained flat. As this was her wish, we acted upon it to ensure that we could communicate with the relevant people to help her move on her behalf. The lady was included with decision making throughout the process. The lady did have a brother that we contacted to ensure that we could make her family aware of her decision. The lady then moved within a month. Throughout this sensitive and complex situation I was able to ensure the ladies wellbeing was ok. Promote the lady to be included in decision making. I was able to be respecting of her values and beliefs.

Bii –

Explain how finding out about an individual’s history, preferences, wishes and needs is an important part of creating a good care or support plan. By finding out the individual’s history it will allow others to have a better understanding of that person. The individual’s preferences being in a care plan is very important for you to be able deliver support. If you did something that an individual did not like you may cause them distress. If you know how to support an individual if they were feeling upset you may be able to help them more with sensitive issues. The needs and wishes of each individual will be very different to someone else. By knowing this information it will inform others who deliver support to, it will enable accuracy and relevance when developing and implementing an individual support plan. Biii – Explain why it is important to review care or support plans with an individual, and to monitor their changing needs or preferences. Individual’s lives change from day to day. Individual’s relationships may change with friends and families. They may develop new relationships that need to be in their care plan.

Medical needs may change, such as medical conditions and medication changes. The individual’s abilities may change which could have an impacted on the support that is needed. Individual’s daily and weekly activities that they take part it may change. It is important that everyone is informed of this. To ensure that the best quality of care is provided changes and preferences need to monitored regularly and updated in their care plan. Biv Explain how useful care or support plans can be in supporting person centered practice If you have been supporting an individual for a while you would have gotten to know them fairly well. You will be able to assess the accuracy of their care plan and she if the information provided in relevant. You will be able to know the individuals preferences and will be able to identify if they are different from what is stated in their care plan. If there care plan needs updating to reflect that person you will be able to discuss it with your colleagues and see if they also feel the same.

Task C – Case studies
Case Study 1

Ci – Some individuals may not have the ability to express their views. This may mean that sometimes we are able to obtain consent from an individual receiving support. There are various reasons as to why this may be. The individual may have sensory, visual or verbal impairments. There may be a language barrier. Some individuals may have a lack of awareness of the choices offered and may not know the implication of their choices. Some individuals may be suffering from confusion or mental illness. Cii – There are various different ways you may be able to gain consent to activities or actions. By ensuring the individual has access to information surrounding activities and action and be allowing them to have alternative decisions. This may help them understand the choices offered. Allowing the individual to have time to decided and think about the implications of their choices.

You could try different communication techniques such as a language interpreter, using active listening, making involving another person who is able to communicate with the individual to enable a two-way discussion. You could write it down on some paper. If you still aren’t able to obtain consent you could seek further advice. Ciii- Explain what a social worker can do if they cannot gain consent or is unsure of the response. If action has started to be taken it should be ceased as you have not be able to gain consent. You should remain calm and empathetic to ensure you are not putting the individual under any stress. You should consult your manager to see if any feedback or advice can be given. Everything that you have done regarding the situation must be documented.

Case Study 2

C –
Some people may try and impose their view on an individual. There are various different approaches you can use to help individuals make informed choices. You should provide them with all relevant accurate information to help them make their choice. When discussing choices with them avoid making your own assumptions and do not let your own prejudice influence their choice. Enough time should be given to allow them to think about their decision to ensure they are happy with it. You could ask their next of kin to provide encourage and deliver advice to the individual. You could ask gather information from an expert.

CV .

Sometimes decisions may be made by others for the individuals, there are ways in which you can help them challenge the decision. You could support and encourage the individual to speak with confidence and voice their opinions. If you, as a care worker are concerned about decisions that have been made, you could speak to a senior member of staff. If the individual has confided in you that they are not happy with what decisions have been made, you could offer to voice concerns on their behalf. If something has been non –compliant with legislation requirements or policies, they may be unaware of this, so you could then help them identify this.

Cvi –

Sometimes the views of others such as, medical practitioners, social care workers and family members are allowed to influence the choices individuals make. There are possible consequences that may occur from this. The individual may have feelings of alienation as they feel they do not have any say in their life. This may lead to stress and anxiety and low self-esteem. If a poor choice has been made by someone else for example surrounding someone’s physical wellbeing it could result in discomfort or pain. There could be complaints from the next of kin.
