Dear [Parent/Guardian Name],
My name is Eileen Dover, and I’m an 18-year old babysitter currently finishing up school at Robert McQueen High. After reading your post on Sitter.com yesterday I couldn’t resist sending you my application — Little Janet looks so sweet! I’d love to meet the two of you in person to see if I’d be a good fit for her. I’ve been babysitting kids for about four years now, and it’s an absolute blast!
I saw that Janet is four years old and quite the sociable kid, which is great! I’ve worked with highly social children in the past, and I love it. In particular, a dynamic 5 y.o. girl has been keeping me busy the past half year! Preparing meals, reading sessions, coordinating outdoor activities – I love spending time with children, and I do my best to make our time together fun, healthy, and educational.
I noticed you’re searching for someone to look after Janet this summer. I’ve already done summer babysitting for a family with an awesome boy and girl pair (aged 4 and 3), and I’m very familiar with how to entertain children during the long summer days. Swimming (I’m a licensed lifeguard), park excursions, proper hydration – I’m qualified and happy to handle all duties required of a babysitter during the hot summer months.
I would love to talk with you over the phone or in person about taking care of Janet this summer! You can reach me at [PHONE], or by email at [EMAIL]. I’m still in school, so you can reach me after class (2:30pm). I look forward to hearing back from you, thanks for considering me!
3. Three Key Writing Tips
1. Show your enthusiasm.
The best writers get us emotionally invested in their work. Whether it be through portraying the inevitable, tragic downfall of a protagonist or by painting a picturesque landscape in our imagination, they are able to manipulate our feelings with only words.
You don’t need to be an excellent writer to craft a stunning babysitter cover letter, but you do need to be able to convey your enthusiasm for the position. Parents don’t want to leave their child with a Negative Nancy! Ask yourself the following questions:
- Why do I love babysitting?
- What do I love about children?
- Which educational activities do I enjoy engaging children in?
- What recreational activities do I enjoy engaging children in?
If you can answer any of these in a positive way, include them in your letter. Our applicant didn’t write a lot, but she didn’t have to! You can tell she’s excited in each brief paragraph, which is good enough.
Exclamation marks are fine, but don’t overdo it! If you use too many, your writing will come across as insincere.
2. Prove that you’re trustworthy.
Parents need to be able to trust the babysitter they end up hiring. A good way to start building this trust is with your cover letter. If you want to highlight your trustworthiness, include some of the following details:
- Important life skills
- Ability to educate
Take a look at our example below. Everything highlighted in green makes Eileen seem dependable. The yellow highlights illustrate her enthusiasm. Look at how well she integrated these two key aspects of her personality in her writing–
If you’re able to similarly show your passion and capability in your cover letter, you’ll easily catch the attention of prospective parents.
3. Personalize every cover letter you send out.
Thankfully it’s not necessary to rewrite each cover letter you plan on mailing out. What you must do though, is personalize each one so that parents know you’re specifically interested in babysitting their child/children.
Parents can be incredibly picky, and if you send out applications in bulk you’ll leave many unimpressed.
Parents can be incredibly picky, and if you send out applications in bulk you’ll leave many unimpressed. However, by customizing a few lines throughout, it flips the odds in your favor. Try to organically include the following information to give that personalized feeling:
- Child’s name & age
- Child’s personality (and how you’re a good fit for him/her)
- Time of day/year you’d be responsible for babysitting
This type of information helps build trust, and shows your legitimate interest (and excitement) to babysit their child. If you’re able to achieve this, you’ll quickly land jobs.
