Sidney Stringer Academy Head Teacher Personal Statement

Tell us about your job

I am currently Assistant Principal for Teaching and Learning at Sidney Stringer Academy in Coventry. This involves leading a team of Teaching and Learning consultants and being responsible for standards of Teaching and Learning across the academy. We are also a Teaching School, and so I am involved in writing and delivering CPD programmes for the Teaching School which is very exciting.

Tell us about a typical day at work

A good day always starts with Coco pops! There is no typical day in teaching; this is what makes teaching and leadership so exciting! A day can involve anything from one to one support for pupils, meeting with consultants, catching up and supporting staff that might need it, leading a meeting or facilitating a course. The best days involve teaching Psychology!

What do you enjoy most about your role as Assistant Principal?

Anything that involves talking about teaching and learning. I am lucky to work at an academy where the culture is all about teaching and learning and so there are lots of opportunities to share excellent ideas at a whole school level as well as department level. Click on this link to see some of the days that have been shared.

What do you find challenging?

Schools are really busy places and so I would say time is the greatest constraint and I know any teachers reading this will be nodding in agreement! There is so much research out there and so many strategies to read about and trial. I wish we could try all of them!

How did you get into teaching?

I started out in schools to get some experience because I wanted to be an educational psychologist. However, after 2 days at the school I ended up falling in love with teaching. Luckily, I was offered a training place at that school a few weeks later, on what used to be called the Graduate Teacher Programme. This has now been replaced with schools direct.

Ultimately, I chose to do a PGCE to give me experience of more than one school.

What advice would you give anyone thinking about a future in teaching?

I'll share the best advice I was ever given, which was that choosing a school to work in is the same as choosing a marriage partner. Your values and ethos have to be the same otherwise it just won't work. My advice would be to ensure that you spend some time in more than one school gaining experience, not just of the classroom, but getting to understand the culture within the school.

World Class Schools Quality Mark (WCSQM)

On 7th December 2017, Churchill College, Cambridge University hosted the annual WCSQM Award Ceremony. 180 staff and students from 32 World Class schools throughout the UK came together to celebrate their students’ World Class achievements in 2017. For 16 schools, this was a ceremony to award them the World Class Schools Quality Mark accreditation, after making it through to the final assessment stage last month.

This was of particular pride to Sidney Stringer Academy who have been awarded ‘World Class Status’ by the WCSQM. The status can only be given to schools judged Outstanding by Ofsted and that surpass the expectations of being an ‘Outstanding School’.

WCSQM set a series of demanding standards that students at the Academy have to prove that they have met to recieve the award. Sidney Stringer Academy was one of 16 schools to meet the demanding requirements.

We are extremely proud of the Academy for achieving this status and for demonstrating the high standards of achievement and success that are at our core.
